- Set a daytime appointment so you can inspect the vehicle properly.
- Before the test drive, check the undercarriage, engine and body for rust or damage.
- Check the interior for cleanliness, comfort and size.
- Inspect the tires.
- Check the oil for the proper level.
- Check the radiator for leaks or corrosion.
- Drive on the highway to measure acceleration and handling.
- Test the vehicle braking.
- Test the steering - does the vehicle track well?
- Practice parking for maneuverability and listen for "pops" or "whines".
- After the test drive, inspect the engine for leaks, odors or smoke.
- Request and review any service records, receipts and paperwork.
- Have a mechanic inspect the vehicle prior to purchase.
